A midline catheter is a peripheral IV catheter inserted in the upper arm and advanced to the axillary or basilic vein — shorter than a PICC and not classified as central. Midlines are an excellent intermediate-duration access option (1–4 weeks) for patients who don't require central access.
Midlines reduce the frequency of peripheral IV restarts, improve patient comfort, and carry a lower risk profile than central catheters — making them a preferred option for many IV therapy indications.
